Did you experience vertigo after getting a massage? I commonly hear stories of patients who got vertigo after a massage.

I often find two co-occurring root causes of dizziness in patients who get vertigo after a massage:

  • BPPV
  • Cervical Vertigo

Let’s discuss the two most common causes I find in my patients and what type of specialist may be able to help.

BPPV

BPPV is a benign inner ear condition that commonly causes vertigo after getting a massage. Patients with BPPV have crystals loose in one or both inner ears that cause vertigo when they roll over, lie down, or get out of bed.

This condition is easily treated by a skilled vestibular specialty provider, but may not be resolved with general medical care. You can learn more about BPPV treatment here.

In this article, I talk about finding a vertigo doctor.

Cervical Vertigo

Dizziness or vertigo from the neck is often overlooked in traditional medical settings.

Many doctors will not even consider your neck as a possible cause of vertigo. Yet I commonly find neck tension, pain, and stiffness in patients with vertigo after getting a massage.

These symptoms along with increased headaches can indicate a possible case of cervical vertigo.

You can learn about upper cervical vertigo here.

In this article, I talk about who can help with cervical vertigo.

Talk to your doctor about your vertigo after getting a massage so you can find answers and relief.
